What
motivated Magellan to explore?
When he was twelve years od, Ferdinard Magellan became a pageboy in the court of Queen Leonor of Portugal. Here he learnt arithmetric, Latin and mapmaking. At the palace he also heard about the wonderful voyages of Christopher Clombus. Why is Magellan famous? Ferdinard was the first European to sail around the world. In 1519, he presuaded Charles1 of Spain that he could reach the Spice Islands in the East by sailing around Cape Horn and so across the Pacific Ocean. He succeeded in reaching the islands, but became invovled in a local battle and was killed. What if Magellan never sailed around the world? If Magellan never sailed around the world the Spice Islands wouldn't be discovered so there wouldn't be nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon. There would also not be a Pacific Ocean and the Magellan Strait in South America would be named something else.
